Title: The Reluctant Fundamentalist
Author: Mohsin Hamid
Penguin, 2007
This slim novel is a perfect example of how treating words economically can make a story profit hugely. Changez is sent by his family to Princeton, where he excels and he is offered, and accepts, a job with one of New York's most prestigious companies. As a modern day prince, Changez is offered success, riches, yes, the American dream, but 9/11 takes place and it becomes impossible to combine who he was - an upper class Pakistani - with who he is - an American businessman. The author has chosen a terrific point-of-view in a kind of one-sided dialogue, which keeps the reader on her toes. Don't miss this one! It is available in Swedish paperback as well.
