Mister Pip

This novel, set during civil war in a South Sea island, is about identity and the power of imagination. It is at first a philosophical story about a white man who teaches the island kids using Great Expectations as a guide to... well everything. Then, just when I started to think it was all getting a bit boring, one sentence changes the entire tone and direction of the story (for those of you who want to know which sentence: p.173, line 13). It took me completely of guard and the finish of the novel, from that sentence and onwards, is like an anchor that centers the story and pulls it down to your guts!

Månadens böcker - januari

Endast en bok kvalar in från årets första skörd och det är On Chesil Beach. Detta var kanske väntat. Fyra nackspasmer hade den fått om jag ahde skullat betygsätta den. Den är elegant, mitt i prickig och berör, utan att breda ut sig över tid och evighet. Starkaste insatsen från mcEwan på ett tag!

För att få tillträde till den får man skicka ett meddelande till mig och så får man användarnamn och lösen. Detta för att inga snuskpellar ska trilla över bloggen.

A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers

24-year-old Z leaves her Chinese hometown to study English in London for a year. The culture clash is complete and she feels maddeningly lonely. When she finds love and passion with an older man, she is happy for a while, until she also discovers the alien Western concepts of individuality, privacy and self-sufficiency.

This is a thought-provoking novel that makes you look at Western culture and our notion of what love is in a new way and it feels refreshing that not all books out of China (and other totalitarian states) read like the authors' personal vendettas against the country they fled. Nothing is all bad. The prose reflects Z's struggle to master the English language and also reveals how closely related language and culture really is.

Apart from people who enjoy a good read, this novel would be perfect for a reading group since there are an abundance of things to discuss, and also for students who are good at English and therefore can appreciate Z's "bad" language and what it says about its native speakers.

The Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction

Trying to find a good read nowadays is a veritable jungle of old and new fiction and, therefore, it is always helpful to look for certain marks of quality to ensure success. These marks can be the praise of critics whose taste you share, magazines that take literature seriously and that review the kinds of books you are looking for. Another sign of quality is awards the novel has been given. But, there are a gazillion awards out there and they might not all suit your literary taste. This is one of my personal favourites: The Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction!

It was created in 1992 to bring attention to women's work in particular. Women of any nationality who have written novels in English are eligible for the award (a statuette called the Bessie and £30,000!) and the panel of judges consists of five "high-profile" women, newly selected by Orange each year. Below, I will list the last ten winners with a brief comment for each one!

This is not so much a novel as it is a collection of potential near-future scenarios, all centered around the problems and benefits concerning gene technology. It is definitely thought-provoking and the last few sentences are really chilling. Most of the stories are riveting and this is a great read, even though some of the tales are a bit fantastical. She said naively...

Well, I managed 469 out of 750 pages, which I think is quite good considering the time and arm strength at my disposal. India fascinates me and so do novels about the country. Why? Because it is an incredibly complex and interesting society. This novel, however, is, despite its considerable bulkiness, limited to those part of Indian society that, I think, add to the flavor of India but is not the at the juicy core: the world of men, economics and politics. Women and family life, extraordinarily important to all aspects of life in India, is marginalised and this makes me look for pleasure elsewhere!

Nytt betygssystem!

I denna tid av nya, brillianta betygssystem inser jag att även mina bokrecensioner borde prydas av ett intrikat och sinnrikt sådant. Postryttare, stjärnor och getingar i all ära - mitt betygssytem kommer att bestå av nackspasmer eftersom jag i sanning börjat välja böcker efter hur mycket nackont de kan beräknas vara värda och symbolen kan ni se här bredvid i förstoring. Som första bok har Purple America retroaktivt fått ett betyg. Skrolla ner och kolla!

• Noll nackspasmer: inte ens värt mödan att lyfta!
  
• En nackspasm: kanske värd mödan bara för att försäkra sig om att man fortfarande bsitter förmågan att länka bokstäver till ord - inte annars!
  
• Två nackspasmer: böcker som företeelse är ju härliga och boken som föräras detta betyget kan ju vara trycksvärteberättigad bara för att något läsvirke kan behövas på tåg, i köer och andra situationer där bokmalen tycker att frånvaro av bok är tråkigare än att ha något, vad som helst.
  
• Tre nackspasmer: Boken kan gå någorlunda rakryggad från sin träff med mig, med ett visst mått av heder.
  
• Fyra nackspasmer: nu börjar det göra ont, men det här får kosta lite; det ska till ett antal smärtsamma muskelkonvulsioner om boken inte ska läsas ut.
  
• Fem nackspasmer: Streckbänk, knark, sjukgymnastik och inhyrd barnvakt med starka armar. Boken är värd allt!!

Purple America

Title: Purple America
Author: Rick Moody
Backbay Books, 1998 (1997)

I wanted to read Rick Moody because I saw the movie The Ice Storm, based on his novel with the same name, years ago and really dug it. Purple America is set in an affluent suburb of Connecticut and the protagonist is pampered, stuttering drunk Hex Raitliffe who comes home to find he is now the sole caretaker of his MS-ridden mother after her husband has abandoned his post.

The story is rambling and leaves few pauses for breath. Although hilarious at times, reminding me of Jonathan Franzen's poop chase in The Corrections, with its slapstick fall-on-your-ass humor, it is also sad and Moody's style is pretencious bordering on self-ironic which he, surprisingly, manages to turn into an attractive combination. All in all, definitely worth the time and maybe a neck-spasm or two.

Lätta böcker sökes!

Jag har hört att amning gör en puckad. Med tanke på detta, och att jag när jag skulle räkna ihop föräldradagarna inför denna månaden fick den 7-20 januari till 19 dagar (jag räknade på händerna - flera gånger), skulle man kunna tro att det var sant och att detta inlägg var en vädjan efter boktips för idio... jag menar individer med särskilda behov. Det är det inte. Jag kan inte lova att jag inte är en smula mer retarderad än innan men med lätta menar jag ordets mest bokstavliga betydelse. Mina axlar har nämligen spasmat ur av ammande och barnbärande. Tunga, tjocka böcker går alltså bort och lätta, korta böcker efterlyses. Trots mina många nya utmaningar som läsare vill jag dock sikta högre än bilderboken om båtar (se förra inlägget). Bara så att ingen av ren välvilja misstolkar min intention.
