A Thousand Splendid Suns

Title: A Thousand Splendid Suns
Author: Khaled Hosseini
Bloomsbury, 2008 (2007)

Without a doubt, Hosseini has good stories in him. He is also one of the few people I know of who has given the people of Afghanistan a face other than the cowering burkha-clad woman or the dour-faced, long-bearded mullah.

A comparison to The Kite Runner is, however, unavoidable and this new novel does not measure up. It's not miles behind, you can see it in the rear-view mirror, but you're not getting irritated at it for being up your ass. If you know what I mean. The story is not as carefully crafted, the brush-strokes at times a little coarse. Still, if you're looking for a run-of-the-mill good read, go right ahead and enjoy this one!
