Author: John Boyne
Black Swan, 2007 (2006)
I definitely think this would be a good choice for the English A-course! The language is easy but the young hero has a distinctive voice of his own. The protagonist is a young German boy whose father is given the post as Commandant of Aushwitz during WWII. The boy is happily unaware of the Holocaust and the Final Solution, but their new house, adjacant to the camp is boring and there are no friends to play with, at least on his side of the barbed-wire fence...
The novel takes on the topic of the Holocaust from a new point-of-view which is refreshing and there are a lot of opoortunities to practise "reading between the lines".
