Title: Special Topics in Calamity Physics
Author: Marisha Pessl
Penguin, 2007
A scrumptious fatty of a novel. The language is popping with quotables on every other page and it is a joy to read. Young, brilliant Blue Van Meer travels the country with her professor/drifter Dad but the small family finally settle down for Blue's final high school year. Unfortunately, she gets tangled up with some precautious teens (characters straight out of a typical high-school movie; do these kids really exist anywhere in real life?) and, unfortunately, finds her mysterious teacher, Hannah Scheider, hanging dead from a tree. The first and last third of the novel are the best. Browse through the middle - just to make sure you don't miss any juicy lingo bits.
